Why some smart kids can't read? Phonological skills predict reading success and not a high IQ score

Updated: Nov 25, 2021

Smart and even extremely smart as well as highly gifted students cannot read if they have very weak phonological skills.

Their high IQ score/intelligence and gifted range in abstract reasoning and logic do not predict reading success in the beginning stages but it is the phonological skills of the students. It is how well they manipulate the sounds – connect, remove, add, remove the sounds because the English language is based on elemental sounds.
